Statement from Dr. Shermis -
“Women can avoid potentially disfiguring surgery when there’s a better, minimally invasive solution available for fibroadenomas.”
A new breast lump detected by a woman or her physician is a common occurrence. Understandably, the greatest concern is that the lump is a sign of breast cancer. Fortunately, the vast majority of breast lumps are due to benign (non-cancerous) causes such as a cyst or a fibroadenoma (a benign tumor).
Many patients with a diagnosis of a fibroadenoma (determined by a biopsy) choose to have them treated because of pain, anxiety, ongoing growth or cosmetic reasons. A larger fibroadenoma can also disrupt the breast physical examination. Left alone, some fibroadenomas may interfere with furture breast imaging, such as a mammogram.
Some important facts regarding fibroadenomas:
- Two thirds of women will decide to have their fibroadenoma removed within 5 years of diagnosis
- Over 30% of fibroadenomas continue to grow.
- Approximately 500,000 fibroadenomas are treated annually in the US
- Cryoablation is a non-surgical alternative to surgical breast lump removal.
